Upcycled Man's Shirt Apron

I did this a few weeks ago, and I never got around to showing you. I'm really happy with how this apron turned out. Meg is, too. She has been wearing it every time she cooks!

It's a very large men's shirt, though I could have used a smaller one for her, that I cut along the side seams to remove the back. I applied the same treatment to another shirt, and I used the back of that one to make the bias edging.

The most painful part of this project was making the many yards of bias tape, but I'm really happy with the finished look that it gives to the apron.

I'm looking forward to finding the time (at the end of May???) to make another one. I bought 8 shirts at the church yardsale for $0.25 each. I thought the shirts, which are in pristine condition, would fit my son, but they're too big.

What do you think? Have you made one of these? I'm also debating whether or not to cut the collar off and make it a more traditional bib-style. Which would you like better?

  1. That's darling. If the collar doesn't bother Meg, leave it!

I'd like to make myself some traditional aprons, from the waist down. I'm wondering if I can use some of those shirts I just put in the goodwill clothes because Noah is officially out of "regular store" men's sizes. Truly, when will he stop growing? I bet I can use the back for the apron. Never even thought of that! Very clever, you are,

  2. I like my aprons to come up high because I'm very messy! ;-) I didn't mean that I'm thinking of changing Meg's apron, but I'm going to be making more of them, so I might take the collar off some of those to see how it looks. It is kind of fun with it, though. And it's not an original idea---I'm sure I saw it on Pinterest.
