7 Quick Takes (Camping Edition)

Seven things to take on a frigid November camping trip:

~1~
A nice, toasty, handknit wool hat, or 3.  And it's especially nice if it matches the theme of the campout, which is fishing.
And gloves.  Fingerless mitts would be good for fishing, I think, but I'm pretty sure I don't have time to whip up another pair or two.

~2~
Food is always a good thing to take along, especially extra, even if group meals are planned.  I can't go camping without being reminded by my Dear Husband of the time he went camping with the Boy Scouts, and the Grubmaster failed to show up or let anyone know he wouldn't be coming---or bringing the food.  So his patrol would have starved if his dad hadn't beaten up the other dads convinced the other, unwilling patrols to share.

~3~
Dry firewood and plenty of tinder to start that fire quickly with freezing hands.  (note to self:  buy firewood this afternoon!)  State parks are often picked clean of wood, and it's been raining for the past few days, so it'll all be wet anyway.

~4~
Ummm, matches. (See number 3)

~5~
The Down Comforter from your bed.  I don't know what my husband will do to keep warm, but if he can't find spare blankets, he at least has the luxury of sleeping in a 60+ degree room instead of a 27 degree tent.

~6~
Sleeping pads.  NOT air mattresses.  Air mattresses may be a bit more comfy, but all that air underneath you makes you COLD.  You know how bridges freeze before the road?  That's because of all the cold air underneath.

~7~
Lots of hot chocolate and snacks for kids who seem to eat constantly while camping, especially when it is cold.

Patience.

And a good attitude.

(I hope I remember to pack those!)

  1. Can't you take, like, a movie, or a good book? Some knitting? I really don't like camping anymore. I like being comfortable too much. ;-) Have fun! Take a rosary at the very least.

  2. I've got a good book; my knitting is in the car (although last year my hands were too cold to knit!); and there is always a rosary in the car, if not my purse. I'll be praying for dawn to come quickly!
