FB

I don't know about you, but I'm getting pretty tired of Facebook.  That actually didn't take very long---I've never loved it.  Too hard to navigate.  Too much garbage that I'm not interested in.  And that may very well go for the stuff I've posted, too!

I'm mostly tired of hearing about how it's less and less private all the time.  They're selling our data to everyone and you constantly have to update your privacy options to stay (a little) private.  Fortunately, I have a geeky (and I mean that in the best way possible!) friend who is up on all that stuff and always posts warnings.

All those apps?  I used a few in the beginning, but it really creeps me out how you get a message like this anytime you accept a hug, or flowers, or a button, or some other virtual doodad:

Allowing Hugged access will let it pull your profile information, photos, your friends' info, and other content that it requires to work.

I mean, really?  It needs my friends' info, too?  I stopped using those a long time ago and block the apps as they come in.  So, sorry, if I didn't accept your box of chocolates, tattoo, or hug, or whatever!  No offense intended.

Lately I've been considering the call to quit FB.  Here are 10 Reason Why You Should Quit FB, too.  I can't imagine it's going to happen.  It is a very easy way to keep up with family and friends who are far away.  Even the ones close by.

I mostly worry about how much information is out there on my children.  Young people don't seem to have the same concerns about their whole lives being available to the world.

What are your concerns about Facebook??

  1. Same concerns. It's also a huge time-sucker -- something we can all do without.

  2. I like fb mostly. But I don't have those privacy concerns...because I keep my privacy..ummm...private. not my email address or my avatar or my handle tell my REAL name. nor my kids names. I have a zillion cousins and aunts and uncles on fb and this is the best I've kept up with them in 35 years so it's a good thing. But I don't friend friends' friends.....random game people or "suggestions" as a rule.
and all those apps? forget it!! I do my farmville and that's it...but I'm about ready to quit the farm. my ipod has CHECKERS and frankly...that's a lot more fun and challenging. I started the farm game as a time waster when I needed to stay awake at work anyway and I can easily do that with checkers.....trying to beat the computer at the highest level!! (I'm getting there...slowly)

  3. Privacy just keeps dwindling away on FB, specially over this past year. People should not assume their privacy is well guarded, by default, it never is, and its a hunt to go capture all those default settings. But, in the long run (for now), there is something to remaining connected to our big kids/grandchildren (especially the photos placed there to see) and our huge amounts of extended family. It sure has changed over the past few years and certainly has become less user friendly and appealing for that matter.
